Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda is where these humble giant which are not seen elsewhere except here and the fellow parks in Uganda and Virunga, Volcanoes National Park is a Rwanda based park located in the north east of Rwanda. It has got over fifteen gorilla groups distributed in its Virunga ranges; this is also the only park where one can enjoy the unrelated activities to his gorilla safari including the activities of tracking the golden monkeys.
Traveling to Rwanda may scare any tourist who has ever heard of its historical political unrests but this is history as security is assured and it’s the order of the day. The fact is that the country is now peaceful, this is one of the factors that inspired us to visit this country to have an experience of these gentle giants in their natural habitats. We prepared this Uganda gorilla tour with Moses from Nature Adventure Africa Safaris Limited.
This was a surprise to us since we passed via Uganda a nearby country that borders Rwanda in the north, four days were enough for us to enjoy the trip in this country, we paid for everything before our arrival to Rwanda. We arrived to Uganda in the afternoon and we were driven to Mbarara where we took our lunch from at Agip Motel and even a place where we slept.
On the second day we traveled to cross the Kyaninga border up to our next residence of stay at The Garden Place Hotel, the services we enjoyed from this place were unlimited which included spotlessly cleanness of the hotel and the staff who were helpful, friendly and polite. The rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable including a powerful and hot shower.
The hospitality that was shown to us was exceptional we cannot even complain, what we observed from this place was enough to explain due to the nice to see volcanic mountains spread around the area and this was amazing. Very early in the morning on the third day we were taken to park headquarters for a briefing, we were given the rangers who escorted us through the park to the thick rain forest where we found the gorillas that were quiet as they were resting.
When they saw us around, the huge silver back that was the biggest in all and therefore looking into the dark brown eyes of these mammals is quite the most memorable adventure activity that Rwanda other than any other destination in the world can offer. From what we observed, like humans and other primates, each individual gorilla had distinctive fingerprints.
The male mountain gorillas were bigger than their female counterparts and the Adult males had silvery white fur at their backs that inspired the name silver back and we were told that it is this silver back which heads the entire group. In fact having a trip to Rwanda for other activities without gorilla tracking cannot be a complete tour, in the evening after enjoying the gorillas we went back to the guest house for an overnight as we waited for our fourth day to go back to Entebbe international airport for our departure.
